Black Friday is an unofficial name for the Friday succeeding Thanksgiving Day in the US of A, which is marked on the fourth Thursday of November. The day following Thanksgiving has been observed as the beginning of the United States Christmas shopping period since 1952. The word "Black Friday" did not become extensively used up until more recent years.
Several stores present well endorsed sales on Black Friday and start very early, such as at midnight, or may even begin their sales at some time on Thanksgiving Day. Black Friday is not an official holiday, but California and some other states celebrate "The Day After Thanksgiving" as a time off for state government workers.
