Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 Mobile Performance Disappoints in Geekbench Test

RTX 4070

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 mobile graphics cards have made their debut on Geekbench, with somewhat disappointing results. Both graphics cards have similar specs, including 8 GB of VRAM, but the GeForce RTX 4070 has 4,608 CUDA cores (36 SMs) while the RTX 4060 has 3,072 CUDA cores (24 SMs). Despite this hardware difference, the two graphics cards performed relatively similarly on the benchmark, with the RTX 4070 scoring 114,074 points and the RTX 4060 scoring 101,850 points, a difference of only 12%.

These scores are lower than expected, especially considering that Nvidia claimed the GeForce RTX 4070 would be able to perform on par with the RTX 3080 Ti while consuming a third of the power. It is possible that the test, which was run on a laptop from Chinese OEM Thunderobot, was not optimized due to issues with drivers or a lack of sufficient power for the GPUs.

Overall, it is difficult to say at this point how the GeForce RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 will perform in the real world. It is worth noting that the RTX 4060 was previously found to be up to 20% faster than the RTX 3060 in one 3DMark test. It will be interesting to see how these graphics cards stack up against their competitors once they are more widely available.

Despite the less-than-stellar performance on Geekbench, it is important to remember that these results may not be indicative of the graphics cards' actual capabilities. It is possible that the test was not optimized, either due to issues with drivers or a lack of sufficient power for the GPUs.

Additionally, it is worth noting that the GeForce RTX 4060 previously performed well in one 3DMark test, where it was up to 20% faster than the RTX 3060. This suggests that the RTX 4060, at least, has the potential to be a strong performer.

It will be interesting to see how the GeForce RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 fare against their competitors once they are more widely available. Until then, it is important to take these Geekbench results with a grain of salt and wait for more comprehensive testing before drawing any conclusions about the performance of these graphics cards.
