Meta Warns of ChatGPT Exploitation by Hackers, Equates it to Cryptocurrency Scams

TecTack News

Facebook owner Meta has warned that hackers are taking advantage of people’s interest in the AI chatbot ChatGPT to break into their devices. In a security report released on Wednesday, the company’s security team said that it had discovered software claiming to offer ChatGPT-based tools via browser extensions and online app stores, which contained malware designed to give hackers access to users’ devices.

Meta’s chief information security officer, Guy Rosen, told reporters that “From a bad actor’s perspective, ChatGPT is the new crypto”, referring to the surge in cryptocurrency scams. The company has blocked the sharing of more than 1,000 malicious web addresses that claimed to be linked to ChatGPT or related tools since March alone.

Some of these tools include genuine ChatGPT features, but also contain malicious code that infects users’ devices. Meta said that it had “investigated and taken action against malware strains taking advantage of people’s interest in OpenAI’s ChatGPT to trick them into installing malware pretending to provide AI functionality.”

The security report highlights the fact that malware operators and spammers try to exploit popular topics to get people’s attention, and generative AI tools have become the latest hot-button issue to attract their attention. This latest wave of malware campaigns aims to trick people into clicking on malicious links or downloading malicious software.

ChatGPT is a language model developed by OpenAI that uses deep learning to generate human-like responses to text inputs. It has become popular in recent years and is used in a wide range of applications, including chatbots, language translation, and content generation.

Meta’s warning is a timely reminder of the importance of being vigilant when downloading and using software, particularly when it claims to offer AI functionality. It is essential to only download software from trusted sources and to be wary of any unexpected or suspicious activity on your device.

The use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT is only set to increase in the coming years, as the technology becomes more advanced and widespread. This makes it all the more important for individuals and organizations to take cybersecurity seriously and to ensure that they are protected against the latest threats.

Meta’s security report also highlights the need for increased awareness of the potential risks associated with the use of AI technology. As AI becomes more prevalent, it is essential that users understand the risks and take appropriate measures to protect themselves and their devices.

This includes ensuring that all software is kept up-to-date with the latest security patches and that all devices are protected by antivirus and firewall software. It also means being aware of the latest threats and taking steps to mitigate them, such as using two-factor authentication and strong passwords.

In conclusion, Meta’s warning about the exploitation of ChatGPT by hackers is a timely reminder of the need to be vigilant when downloading and using software. It is essential to only download software from trusted sources and to be aware of any suspicious activity on your device. As AI technology becomes more prevalent, it is crucial that users take cybersecurity seriously and take steps to protect themselves and their devices against the latest threats.
