The Redmi 12C Offers Affordable Features and Eye-Catching Design

Redmi-12C

The Redmi 12C, a new smartphone from Xiaomi's main sub-brand, has been released in China. While the 12C has some appealing features, including a large battery, 3.5mm jack, and 50MP main rear camera, it also has some less impressive specifications that may not be up to par with what consumers expect in 2023.

One standout feature of the 12C is its unique diagonal pinstripe design on the flattened-edge casing, which is available in bright green, lilac, matte black, or navy blue. The smartphone also has a camera hump on the rear panel, featuring a 50MP "ultra-clear" module with HDR and time-lapse support, as well as a secondary 5MP "AI" shooter.

However, the 12C's 6.71-inch LCD display only has an HD+ resolution and 500 nits of brightness, and it is powered by the 4G/LTE-only MediaTek Helio G85 SoC, running MIUI 13 on an older version of Android. It also has a microUSB port for charging, which may be a drawback for some users.

Despite these limitations, the 12C has a strong selling point in its price. It starts at 699 yuan (around $101) for a 4GB RAM/64GB storage base model, and goes up to 899 yuan (around $129) for the 6/128GB top-end model. The Redmi 12C can be ordered through Xiaomi's online mall in China starting now.

Pros:

  • Attractive design, with a diagonal pinstripe pattern on the flattened-edge casing available in four colors
  • Large 50MP main rear camera with support for HDR and time-lapse photography, as well as a secondary 5MP "AI" shooter
  • 3.5mm jack for headphones
  • Large 5,000mAh battery for extended use
  • Affordable starting price of 699 yuan (around $101) for the base model

Cons:

  • 4G/LTE-only connectivity, no 5G support
  • Low-resolution HD+ display with only 500 nits of brightness
  • Older version of Android running on the MediaTek Helio G85 SoC
  • MicroUSB charging port, rather than a newer USB-C port
  • Lacking some premium features that may be expected in a smartphone in 2023
